The original deck at Ravens Roost had this opening in the center that took up a lot of space. With the opening gone on the new platform there is much more floor space.

Besides the path at the end of Ravens Roost Lane, there is also a short loop trail to the platform via Valley View Lane.

The Ravens Roost platform on Wintergreen mountain that is known for its spectacular view of the Shenandoah Valley and an ideal spot for migratory birdwatching has been completely rebuilt.

Recreating the worn out deck at the end of Ravens Roost Lane [Google Map] required “custom full-dimensional lumber to match the existing lumber used in the 1970’s. We wanted it to look as good as the original and last a long time.” says Jay Roberts, Executive Director of the Wintergreen Property Owners Association, explaining that most of the common building materials used today aren’t as heavy-duty. Structural screws, rather than nails, were used on the new deck.

The WPOA project was done in-house. “Most of the carpentry work was done by Lester Hibbs, Dennis Inscoe, and Bryan Gibson. Other WPOA employees helped in delivering materials, cleaning up, and demolition. All in all, the materials cost about $6,500,” reports Roberts.

Ravens Roost is listed as one of the four “hikes” on Wintergreen mountain appropriate for preschoolers.
