Wintergreen Police

Non-emergency police: 434-325-1106

Because of their extensive training, professional standards and proven professional performance, Wintergreen police are recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia as full-authority law enforcement officers. The sworn personnel have the same required training and legal responsibilities as any municipal or government police.

The Wintergreen Police Department is the only private police agency in the Commonwealth of Virginia to have obtained a Certificate of Accreditation through the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission as a state accredited law enforcement agency.

Patrol officers work with local jurisdictions such as the National Park Service, Nelson County Sheriff's Office, and the Virginia State Police.

Through an agreement between the Nelson County Sheriff and the Wintergreen Chief, Wintergreen officers are appointed as special deputies for Nelson County.

All patrol officers and communications personnel graduate from approved criminal justice academies and attend in-service training as required by state guidelines, re-qualifying annually with all firearms.

Dial 911 to reach the police. On non-emergency calls, such as lost and found, call non-emergency number: 434-325-1106.

Non-emergency Station 2 (valley) 434-325-8538

There are three separate groups that make up fire and rescue at Wintergreen.

One is the Rescue Squad and another is the Fire Department. Both are separate volunteer nonprofit organizations with their own Boards of Directors and members.

The third group is called Wintergreen Fire and Rescue. This refers to a department within WPOA. The 28 full-time employees of Wintergreen Fire and Rescue are cross-trained to assist both the Rescue Squad and the Fire Department.

The Insurance Safety Office (ISO) rating for the Wintergreen Fire Department places the department in the 97th percentile compared to similar departments in the nation.

The rescue squad has medical equipment such as crutches, wheelchairs, etc., which are loaned to property owners with temporary needs.

Capital items such as ambulances and fire-trucks are not supported by WPOA assessments. Donations, many during annual fund-drives, fund these items.
